Learning through Acting

The numbers

1 Native Teacher; 16 children; 4 weeks, 6 total hours; 3 great performances and uncountable laughs.

The Main Show

A 4 week drama course conducted by Big Ben’s native English Teacher Mark Wrycraft. Certainly not the star of the show Mark facilitated the children unknowingly for them to collaborate in small teams to achieve more as a collective group rather than as individuals.

During the 4 weeks an overarching theme was presented for each of the sessions culminating in one final filmed performance for each of the three groups to demonstrate what they had prepared over the classes.

Group work was a fundamental aspect of the course but whole group games or activities took place giving the children opportunities to interact and more importantly practice their English skills with all the course participants.

Assistance and guidance was shared amongst each group with acting tips and skills instructed upon all the members of the course to implement within their performances.

The Rehearsals

Week One:
An introductory week with ice breakers and get to know you games with the premise of the course being discussed.

Three groups were also selected randomly with the groups then having a short amount of time to prepare a 3-5 minute skit (Short performance) to demonstrate at the end of the session.

Week Two:
With the previous week’s session placing children randomly they had some shared experience of working together; this week they would be pushed to work together further creating a delicate part of the final drama performance.

Each group was given a theme based on “The animal Kingdom” and within their groups they had to generate ideas and ultimately finalise a script for themselves.

Confidence building games were used and vocal activities played to get the children focusing on their characters voices.

Week 3:
With a script prepared, lines learnt and the children having thought about their characters the next ingredient was to add movement and stage presence.

This was accomplished by games once more and teacher supervision as well as feedback from the other groups.

Week 4:
The final week saw the children work together to finalize and improve their collective performances combining everything they had learnt the previous 3 weeks to produce a final performance with the added pressure of being filmed.

To take the edge off and to celebrate the final week amusing or more creative drama games were played.
Following the final performances the participants received a diploma for the course and each child spoke a few last minute words regarding what they learnt or enjoyed over the period of the course.

The Real Show

Although Drama was at the forefront of the 4 week workshop the overall winner was English; A rule implemented into the course was for the children to use ONLY English.
With this in mind children tried their hardest to make themselves understood or portray their thoughts or ideas by having to explain and choose their word choices carefully.

With this challenge of only using English another task combatted nicely by the children was group collaboration on an overarching drama performance. With the groups combined randomly and not by groups of friends certainly the children were a little nervous and sceptical at having to work with new faces or personalities.

However in each group leaders shone through and new companionships were created resulting in splendid teamwork to achieve a wonderful last dramatic showcase from each of the three partaking groups.

Overall the Drama course was a success in terms of the children vitally practicing their English in various spoken contexts as well as paring groups of children to then see them cooperate together on a group project which they accomplished with smiles upon their faces and a cheerfulness in their voices.

Tabara Big Ben School

Rasetele copiilor, activitatile amuzante si nenumaratele discutii interesante anima pasnicul peisaj rural.

Odata ajunsi in tabara, dam drumul la distractie.

Personalul

Atelier gratuit – Eroii

Atelier gratuit – Heroes (Eroii)

Cum s-a desfasurat atelierul?

Why choose a Big Ben Summer Camp?

Why choose a Big Ben Summer Camp?

Away from the sprawling city poignantly green tress roll endlessly, clear blues canvas the sky and a gentle breeze whispers calmly. Through the winds the day is alight with children’s laughter, amusing activities and discussions fading into the peaceful Romanian countryside.

Unique tales and memories are being told through the power of language. Language is a connector and in this moment English and German are the power sources fuelling such intriguing conversations.

As the evening draws in, sparklingly beautiful stars transcend the façade of the skyline; children and adults stare blissfully with such wonder and youthfulness lighting their eyes.

The day has been magnificent, games have been played, songs sung, friendships formed and the memory bank filled. In this moment of quiet a calmness resides over this group of explorers as they simply enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of nature.

This little scene is not from a movie or book, rather the Big Ben summer camp where incredible adventures await every day.

There are many reasons to choose a Big Ben summer camp but listed below are the most prevalent:

Safety

Before the great adventure begins steps are taken to ensure the child’s ultimate health and safety; meticulous research is taken to discover a child’s illnesses, allergies, fears etc. to enable them a smooth transition from the comfort of the parent to the opening arms of Big Bens staff.

Come the big day the child is greeted warmly by his or her custodian for the camp, here they will be spoken to and treated with respect, care and a friendly smile. The priority is then to get the child interacting with his peers, making friends and wondering about the days ahead.

The journey to the camp is supervised and Staff interact and comfort the campers, at the camp a secure location with appropriate facilities is the child’s new home for the week.

The camp location is safe, friendly, and within reach of nearby amenities should they be needed.

Schedule

What makes a Big Ben camp so unique is the intriguing, diverse and stimulating offering of activities and events available for the children.

From singing or dancing passionately, to cooperating through teamwork with sports or to relaxing an invigorating day away by staring at the stars or taking a gentle hike.

Activities are relevant to the children’s ages and language level also; younger campers may find themselves playing a captivating and traditional English or German game. Older teenagers may be heard conversing over a thought provoking and challenging board game advancing their English or German skills.

A similar programme awaits both the English and German learning students but with variants in place where needed; although separate programmes are designed the campers join together for specific events or activities. Thusly this creates a balance, a togetherness and unity between the campers and staff there.

The elegance of the schedule which is conducted completely in English or German is designed to push the children but also to teach them and to learn through fun and interactive experiences. Ultimately they are children and the aim is for them to be free to enjoy their youth with a relaxed and appealing camp adventure.

Staff

Finally many camps oversell or have an unfair balance of children to staff; relating back to safety and the schedule Big Ben applies itself differently, the maximum ratio of campers to 1 staff member is 10 to 1 for the groups with more support staff also helping with proceedings.

Subsequently this allows much more meaningful, inspiring and quality interactions to be had between the staff members and the campers. More time is spent communicating, teaching and allowing the children to practice their English or German which they relish.

Also unique to Big Ben is the familiarity of the staff.

The Big Ben camp staff are employers new and old, they have experience and shared stories with Big Ben. They may know the children or staff through various projects or enterprises.

Of course fresh spirit is always good for a camp and Natives brought in to work are vouched for by colleagues or friends of the Big Ben family tree.

Many more reasons await for you to send your child to a Big Ben camp; places are limited so enquire soon to assure your child’s place.

For more information you can contact Big Ben School at cursuri@bigbenschool.ro or 0751.385.518.

Free Workshop – “Heroes”

62Big Ben School Heroes FREE workshop for Big Ben School children

A heroic Sunday full of learning, fun, games and little heroes

What was it?

A free workshop organised by Big Ben School of languages for students of the centre. There were two free workshops conducted with one being for children aged 6-7 and a second workshop for children aged 8-9. The theme of the workshops was Heroes; with this discussions and activities took place based on superheroes or real heroes. But more importantly structures, vocabulary and English learnt previously at Big Ben were implemented and put into practice.

What happened?

Essentially children came at the weekend, they learnt, they laughed, they spoke and they left with smiles upon their faces. To add more detail however, revision took place of previously used classroom English. Familiar English to the children but used in a different setting with new themes. An important part of the language learning process is taking what has already been learnt and to add upon it with new words or settings to make the learner more adapt and comfortable when using another language. With revision occurring the next added ingredient was to learn new words and structures, of course this was through heroes and superheroes. Finally with the new words learnt and discussed it was then vital to practice through speaking, writing and reading worksheets or games.

What was learnt and achieved?

Although Heroes might seem simplistic in its nature much can be learnt through the theme. For example: What can a superhero do? They can fly, they can run really fast, they help people. All answers and words which can be used in different contexts.

When talking about real life heroes discussion of what characteristics this person has took place. They are brave, strong, fearless, smart etc. Again all great words which can be used in the students’ future use of English.

Overall what was achieved though was the ability for the children to come and use their English base whilst enhancing and adding new words or themes to their knowledge level.

Va povestim in cele de urmeaza.

A Big Ben Halloween

As the winter winds creep in and the autumn colours flourish a plethora of oranges can be seen throughout the busy city of Bucharest.

A bounty of orange can be seen at Big Ben also, what is occurring to warrant such an amount of orange and various other theme related items, well Halloween; from ghosts to skeletons and witches hats the language centre has been adorned with decorations for this American traditional holiday. Strange how it’s called a holiday when working still ensues.

I have conflicting views regarding Halloween, it is not such an English holiday, not such a celebrated occasion, not such an over hyped event to be pursued as our American friends.
Therefore going into Halloween and work I was not so thrilled about the event, however my stubborn nature was soon broken down by seeing such little angels in adorable costumes.

There were no angels to be seen amongst the various costumes but many other creative costumes to be admired. I happened across little vampires, witches, an assortment of animals, friendly devils and of course little princesses.
The majority of the staff also had rather imaginative costumes; with prior commitments I was unable to dress up in a traditional Halloween costume but it seemed people did not believe that my costume was of a Romanian guy.

As well as the fun costumes to be seen there was a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere at Big Ben, possibly due to funny Halloween related activities. However I think it’s because the children had been given sweets (Not Candies as our American friends prefer to say) and were filled with sugary goodness. I may have received a sweet or two which perked me up also.

For now the costumes have been stored away and Halloween rolls on; the autumn oranges will soon be replaced with winter whites and darker days, until then let’s enjoy the beauty of this seasonal period.

Back to Big Ben School

- My first week impressions -

Another teaching year ensues then, where the summer went I am unsure, it either went lightning quick or serenely slow. It is hard to gauge, at times I feel the summer was a quick dream, at other times there were slow uncomfortable periods where time seemed to drag eternally.

Whatever the case may be another summer has eclipsed us, the teaching year is upon us and nerves and excitement are twinging in the air.

How do I feel returning for year two at Big Ben School, there are a constant cohort of feelings that warp my mind, in general not just regarding Big Ben. Overall I am excited, the 1st year was a learning year, much was learnt not just about the ways of Big Ben but also about teaching methods and techniques. The biggest learning however took place within myself, certainly it was an interesting year away from rainy England moving so far east. It is not always easy, Bucharest can drag you down but luckily for me there are people and places that light the way once again.

With starting I was excited but also nervous, last teaching year I started Big Ben in October which meant skipping the chaos of the 1st academic week of the school year. With this being my second year I also want to improve, there is a pressure from within myself to perform to a higher standard, I want my students to learn and be happy as well as their parents to notice the improvements and be joyous with their child’s progress.

Also though I want my colleagues and management to admire the work I am undertaking, I have learnt much from my colleagues and respect the work they do, however I don’t want to be just learning, I also want to give and hopefully teach my colleagues something new along my Big Ben journey. After all, if we are not improving and growing we are just wilting flowers.

The 1st week came and went more smoothly than anticipated, there was an occasional hiccup but nothing major, the children class by class came with eager enthusiasm and smiles of joy upon meeting their new or old teachers. Classes throughout the building were filled with laughter, jokes and an eagerness to get the year started.

I must give special commendation to the reception team, the boss and her support staff during the 1st week, as I descended the stairs my 1st teaching day with a class what greeted me was a sea of parents and children, this is natural for the 1st week.
They children in my classes were all great this 1st week, from the little ones to the teenagers, they have a youthfulness and excitement for life that only a child can possess. I am highly thrilled to be teaching them this year, there are an abundance of characters from the quieter or more reserved children to the louder and more boisterous personas. Each will learn differently and each shall offer something different to the classroom environment, it is up to me to nurture their growth and learning.

The upcoming year will not always be so easy, what is upcoming I have no idea, this is life, but I am eager to see how it plays out and make the most of my continued venture at Big Ben School. I shall finish below with one of my favourite quotes:

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift …………..

………….That is why it is called the present
